The Art of Simplicity

Ashlee Mitchell’s musical journey began at Elm Creative Arts Elementary School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. By high school, she was performing as a featured soloist in her school chorus and traveling with the ensemble to performances as far away as Florida—a considerable journey from Wisconsin.

Ashlee continued singing during college, where she worked for a karaoke company while pursuing music as a passion outside of her studies. It was a passion that quickly became apparent to anyone who heard her perform.

After moving to Statesboro, Georgia, Ashlee became a familiar voice at local karaoke venues. In the summer of 2003, one particular performance caught the attention of Chris Mitchell, who happened to be in the audience. After hearing her sing that evening, Chris asked her on a date. Exactly one year later, they were engaged, and a year after that, they were married.

Today, Ashlee and Chris perform together throughout the Southeast, while Ashlee has also established herself as a vocalist with several bands and musical projects. Known for a voice that can best be described as “a big sound in a small package,” she has developed a reputation as a dynamic performer with a soulful style rooted in R&B and blues.

Ashlee’s first solo release on Pladd Dot Records, a lullaby album, came about almost by accident. Several friends had asked her to record lullabies for their newborn children, and as the requests continued to grow, Ashlee realized there was an opportunity to create something more meaningful—a complete collection.

The album reveals a very different side of her voice. While audiences may know Ashlee for the power, grit, and soulful character of her R&B and blues performances, a lullaby album is more intimate and understated. The arrangements allow her to step away from the raw power of her live performances and instead highlight the warmth, purity, and natural range of her voice.

What began as a handful of songs for friends became a deeply personal recording project and a unique chapter in Ashlee’s musical career.
